NUJ Commends DSS for Releasing Detained Journalists
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has praised the Department of State Services (DSS) for swiftly releasing two journalists, Ruth Marcus and Keshia Jang of Jay 101.9 FM, Jos, who were arrested while covering the funeral of the late mother of APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda.
The journalists were detained after sharing a video on social media showing DSS operatives blocking some pastors from entering the church during the funeral service. Their arrest drew widespread concern over press freedom.
NUJ National President Alhassan Yahya said in a statement that the union appreciated the intervention of DSS Director-General Oluwatosin Ajayi, whose prompt actions led to the journalists’ release. Ajayi also personally apologized to the union and instructed DSS operatives to conduct proper investigations before making arrests in the future.
Yahya described the DG’s response as a positive shift in the culture of Nigeria’s security institutions, noting that the willingness to admit mistakes and commit to reforms would help build public trust in the DSS.
The NUJ also called on the DSS and other security agencies to respect journalists’ rights and institutionalize accountability by disciplining officers who violate press freedom.
Finally, the union encouraged journalists nationwide to remain vigilant, professional, and courageous while performing their constitutional duties.
